What a cord costs

These are the prices Massachusetts firewood sellers publish for one full cord, 128 stacked cubic feet, read on their own websites on November 2, 2026.

How much is a cord of firewood in Massachusetts?

Published prices for one full cord of firewood in Massachusetts, by type
WoodSellersMedianMiddle halfRange
Seasoned19$416$395–$500$350–$600
Green (unseasoned)7$350$313–$400$275–$440
Kiln-dried2——$650–$765

One price per seller: the lowest listed price for a single full cord of that type, with delivery as each seller lists it. Multi-cord discounts aren’t used. Kiln-dried has too few prices for a median.

Where does firewood cost the most?

On Cape Cod. The 5 Cape sellers had a median of $500 for seasoned wood, against $400 for the 14 elsewhere in the state. With this few sellers per area, treat it as a pattern, not a precise gap.

Why does a half cord cost more than half a full cord?

Delivery and handling cost about the same whatever the size. Among 12 sellers listing both, two half cords cost a median 32% more than one full cord, from 11% to 58%. A seasoned half cord had a median price of $305 (12 sellers, $230 to $419). If you have the space, one full cord is the cheaper way to buy.

What do delivery and stacking add?

5 of the 19 seasoned prices include delivery, 9 add a fee and 5 don’t say. Where a fee is listed, it runs from $25 to $175 depending on the town, and some sellers deliver free nearby. The 3 sellers that price stacking charge $75 to $150 a cord. Compare offers on the same terms.

A full cord is 128 stacked cubic feet, a half cord 64. The lowest listed price for each type; — means the seller doesn’t list it. Checked November 2, 2026; prices change during the season and some sellers sell out, so confirm before you order.

Cords and cubic feet

Can firewood be sold by the cord in Massachusetts?

No. Massachusetts law says firewood is advertised, offered and sold only in cubic feet or cubic meters1, and the Division of Standards says wood can’t be advertised or sold by the “cord”3. A cord is 128 cubic feet, so a “cord” on a price list should mean 128 cubic feet of closely stacked wood. At the seasoned median of $416 a cord, that’s about $3.25 per cubic foot.

In practice, all 23 Massachusetts price lists we checked were in cords or half cords; 11 of them also gave cubic feet.

Whatever the listing says, the delivery ticket must show the amount in cubic feet or cubic meters, the buyer’s and seller’s names and addresses, the date and the total price2. Stack the wood and measure it before you burn any: the Firewood Guide shows how.

Nearby states

Massachusetts doesn’t publish firewood prices; its energy department surveys heating oil and propane4. Two neighbors do, but neither figure is comparable with the prices above:

  • New Hampshire: $458.82 a cord on October 5, 20265, up 14% from $402.50 in October 20237. That’s unseasoned, log-length wood delivered; the state says cut or split wood runs about twice that6.
  • Maine: $355 a cord, from an informal survey of dealers, for at least 2 cords of partially seasoned wood with local delivery8.

How we collected the prices

  • We checked 23 Massachusetts sellers’ price lists. 19 list a seasoned full cord, the headline figure; the other 4 list only green wood, only loose (thrown) volumes, or don’t say whether the wood is seasoned. The 31 sources below are those 23 price lists plus 8 laws and state agency pages.
  • Sellers’ own websites only: firewood dealers, tree services, farms and landscape yards across Massachusetts, read on November 2, 2026. No marketplace listings, ads or cost-estimate sites.
  • A cord counts as 128 cubic feet when the list says cord or full cord. Loose (thrown) volumes take more space than stacked wood, so they’re left out of the figures.
  • Price lists last dated 2024 or earlier, and prices we couldn’t find again on the live page, are left out. Some sellers are sold out for the season; their listed prices still count.
  • Prices aren’t adjusted for delivery, stacking, log length or species.
